Central Coast Democratic Congressman Salud Carbajal announced new gun safety legislation that provides federal grants and resources to states that follow California’s lead in implementing red-flag laws.
His bill is called the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2021.
Carbajal introduced the legislation at a press conference May 25, closely following the 7th anniversary of the 2014 Isla Vista shooting where six people were killed and 14 others were injured.
California passed a red-flag law following the shooting.
Red-flag laws allow family members and law enforcement officials to petition a judge to prevent an individual in crisis from purchasing a firearm. It can also temporarily remove firearms from that individual.

Santa Barbara County District Attorney
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley announced Thursday that she and her office are committed to protecting the public, especially victims of violent crime, as California plans to make 76,000 inmates eligible for early release.
Inmates that may soon be eligible for early release include those in custody for violent crimes and repeat felony offenders. Good behavior credits will allow these inmates to shorten their sentences by one-third instead of the one-fifth that had been in place since 2017.
“The goal is to increase incentives for the incarcerated population to practice good behavior and follow the rules while serving their time, and participate in rehabilitative and educational programs, which will lead to safer prisons,” corrections department spokeswoman Dana Simas said in a statement.

“The Lompoc Police Department is awaiting the determination of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office pending the review of the completed investigation by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.”
Schmidt said that despite the dispute regarding the weapon, “nothing prevents the AG from taking over an investigation at any time.”
He noted that Sheriff Bill Brown served as Lompoc’s former police chief overseeing the recruitment and training of police officers.
Brown was hired as Lompoc’s police chief in 1995 and served 11 years before being elected as sheriff.
Schmidt also contends that District Attorney Joyce Dudley is “prominently featured” in the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, or POST, training video regarding amendments to laws related to the justified use of lethal force by peace officers.
