System change to allow pregnant women to book specific Covid-19 vaccines

The coronavirus vaccine booking system will be amended “in the coming days” after pregnant women were unable to access their preferred jabs. NHS health providers – including vaccine sites, pharmacies, GP surgeries and hospital trusts – have been told by senior bosses that the system will be changed to allow pregnant women to book specific vaccines. The change comes after a charity said pregnant women have faced confusion, delays and wasted trips in their struggle to get the vaccines they are advised to get – Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. (PA Graphics) The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) says it is “preferable” for pregnant women in the UK to be offered the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines where available.

Pregnant women trying to get Pfizer or Moderna s Covid vaccines face delays

Pregnant women trying to get a coronavirus vaccine have faced delays and wasted trips because they keep being offered the wrong jab, a charity warned today. Britain s medical regulator recommended expectant mothers should get either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine three weeks ago. But now charity Maternity Action says they are struggling to get a first dose because they keep being offered appointments for the AstraZeneca jab, which hasn t been trialled enough on pregnant women for health bosses to give it the green light. NHS chiefs pledged to improve the booking system in the coming days and NHS England said pregnant women in groups currently receiving jabs should contact their GP to book an appointment.

NHS health providers – including vaccine sites, pharmacies, GP surgeries and hospital trusts – have now been told the system will be changed to allow pregnant women to book specific vaccines. After the government announced that people under 40 would be offered an alternative to the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine where possible, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) warned the system for pregnant women – who are advised to have the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines – was not working.

Doctors’ leaders have now called for changes to the official booking system which is leaving expectant mothers unable to find an appropriate vaccine. Official guidelines say they should preferably be offered the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, but the NHS National Booking Service says it does not have any information on how these can be accessed, and directs women to their family doctor.
