Eighty-year-old Nardo Samson, a retired policeman, lay dying in the back of a makeshift ambulance. It was nearly Easter. A surge in coronavirus cases triggered yet another lockdown in the capital Manila, where a confusing patchwork of quarantines to contain the virus persists.
His family s race to save him is part of a larger tableau of the pandemic in the Philippines. Relatives desperate to save a critically ill loved one are left to fend for themselves as recriminations rise against the government s handling of the public health crisis, which has resulted in over one million cases of COVID-19.

On April 20, Dr. Jose Maria Avila succumbed to COVID-19. He was 63 years old.
The altered post suggested that the death of Dr. Avila came after getting the two doses of the vaccine given to him. The altered post claimed that he was inoculated with China’s Sinovac vaccine.
The MMC director said that the original post of their colleague in MMC was altered, saying the original post did not contain what type of vaccine was administered to Dr. Avila.
Javier clarified that Dr. Avila only received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
“Dr. Avila received only ONE dose of a vaccine [brand cannot be disclosed]. He has not completed his regimen of two doses,” he said.

In an interview over DZBB, DOH Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje said Makati, Taguig, Muntinlupa, Manila, and Parañaque will receive 3,000 doses each of the vaccine.
Cabotaje said the five cities were chosen because they have the “appropriate” cold storage facility for the Sputnik V vaccine.
The vaccine, developed by the Gamaleya Institute in Russia, should be stored in a dark place with temperature not exceeding -18 degrees Celsius.
“Meron silang cold chain, ready yung facility nila. Sa Parañaque, ipa-practice natin yung tinatawag nating partnership with the private sector. Subukan nating gawin sa mall (They have cold chains, in their facility is ready. In Parañaque, we will practice what we call partnership with the private sector. Will try to vaccinate in the mall)” Cabotaje noted.
