The concept is pretty simple, yet the output and the effort is incredible: collect donations of domestic and wild game meat from ranchers and hunters, and donate it to veterans and their families.
I first got to see the Veterans Meat Locker in action a few years ago at the VFW bar on the Billings Southside. It was an impressive bag of meat- whether beef, venison, goose, or elk. The concept has since grown all across Montana, with several Veterans Meat Locker programs across the state.

BRIDGER â Volunteers with the Billings nonprofit, Montana Veteran s Meat Locker, took a 106-mile tour through four Carbon County towns Saturday, giving free domestic and game meat to veterans and their families.
Q2 caught up with the volunteers at their first stop in Bridger at 9:30 a.m. Jerad Werning, a board member for the Montana Veteran s Meat Locker, spear headed the organization of the nonprofit s first distribution effort of the year. He grew up in Edgar, just 13 miles north of Bridger.

He grew up in Edgar, just 13 miles north of Bridger. I figured it would be a good place. We get a lot of donations from Carbon County of wild game and beef, so why not give back to the community? We just planned to do a loop to hit all of Carbon County as much as we could, Werning said.

BILLINGS â Volunteers with the Montana Veteran s Meat Locker will take a tour of four Carbon County towns Saturday, giving out free meat to veterans who can show proof of service.
The nonprofit s freezer trailer will be in Bridger from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. next to the Jim Bridger Statue on the south end of town.
Next, the crew will be in Red Lodge from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Silver Strike Bowling Alley at 609 Broadway Ave. N.
Gifts Of Love delivers presents to families, veterans, and patients

KALISPELL â Moving Forward Adaptive Sports (
link) delivered more than 600 gifts to families in need this holiday season during its annual Gifts Of Love event.
Starla and Shannon Barnes started the event eight years ago to make sure that no one goes without cheer during the holidays.
The group delivered presents to Kalispell Regional Medical Center as well as the veterans home in Kalispell, and also delivered presents to familyâs homes.
Starla says that she would not be able to continue this event without help from the community: âFor me it s huge and humbling at the same time knowing that we have such an amazing community that will step up when people need it,â she said.
