Let the Re-Election Guessing Games Begin: Ballots & Boundaries

April 27, 2021 12:07 PM Now that states know whether their congressional delegations will shrink or grow, it’s time to indulge in one of Washington’s favorite games: Guessing who won’t risk making re-election pitches to voters accustomed to being represented by someone else. Four House members are retiring and another four have declared their interest in another job—including Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan (D), who announced a bid for the U.S. Senate ahead of the Census Bureau confirming that Ohio will lose one of its 16 districts. Ryan’s northeastern Ohio district has been trending Republican and could be dismantled.

Abortion review committee added to state budget bill

The proposal came as an amendment to House Bill 2, the state budget bill. The committee would cost $90,000 over the two-year budget. The is the second attempt by lawmakers to create a panel to review abortions to see if the provider should be reimbursed by the federal insurance program. A previous attempt died on a 9-10 vote in the Senate Finance and Claims Committee, with a handful of Republicans joining all Democrats in opposition. That earlier amendment would have created a panel of three physicians, with the governor, Senate president and House speaker each appointing one, to determine if abortions for women insured by Medicaid were reimbursable. To qualify, the abortion would have to be deemed medically necessary, necessary to save the life of the mother or because the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest.

Rapid population growth gives Montana 2nd US House seat

Rapid population growth gives Montana 2nd US House seat By IRIS SAMUELSApril 26, 2021 GMT HELENA, Mont. (AP) Montana’s recent population boom will let the state regain the second U.S. House seat it lost nearly 30 years ago, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures released Monday. With over 1 million people, the state’s current at-large congressional district is the most populous in the U.S. and is second only to Alaska’s in geographic size. Growing from one to two seats, Montana will go from being the least represented state in the union with close to a million people in the single congressional district in 2010 to the most well-represented. The state now has just over half a million state residents per representative after the 2020 census, significantly lower than the national average population per representative of 760,000.
