As if traveling hasn’t looked different enough this past year, things just got taken up a notch. Last week, the CDC unveiled a new mandate requiring all inbound U.S. flyers to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test prior to departure. The policy, which goes into effect on January 26, now has destinations across the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, racing to provide a solution for travelers who may have already been wary to travel abroad in the midst of the pandemic. Airlines will be responsible for confirming the negative test result or documentation of recovery for all passengers before they board, and will deny boarding to any person who does not provide documentation of a negative test or recovery, or chooses not to take a test.

Hotels in Mexico s Riviera Maya offering free COVID-19 tests for international tourists

Americans vacationing in certain parts of Mexico may be able to get their COVID tests for free. Many of the hotels in Mexico’s Rivera Maya region, home to spring break designations like Tulum and Playa del Carmen, will provide free COVID-19 testing for international travelers, the Riviera Maya Hotel Association (AHRM) announced. The program comes as coronavirus cases continue to rise, and following the U.S. government requiring all travelers to present a negative coronavirus test before entering the U.S. as a new strain of the contagious virus spreads.   Hundreds of hotels in Mexico will now provide free COVID-19 tests for tourists. The Comprehensive Port Administration of Quintana Roo (APIQROO) says they will move forward with port projects this year that will see more than 16 million in infrastructure investments. While some of the investment money will go toward infrastructure repairs from October 2020 storms, a majority of the money will be spent on improvements for the terminals of Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel and Chetumal. Alicia Ricalde Magaña, general director of APIQROO (Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo), explained that the rehabilitation of the retaining wall of the Puerto Morelos maritime terminal as well as the repair of the wooden docks of the Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juárez terminals, along with the Caletita ferry dock in Cozumel, are all part of the project.

Roberto Cintrón Gomez, head of the association says he has had talks with state governor Carlos Joaquin about implementing the strategies to maintain the region’s competitiveness in the face of the pandemic. He said that it is only a matter of time before the U.S. will begin requesting a PCR test for re-entry into the country, a move that Canada recently made for all incoming travelers.
