Pervis Staples, a co-founding member of the legendary gospel group, The Staple Singers, passed away suddenly on May 6, 2021 at his home in Dolton, Illinois according to Adam Ayers,
Ask the Cuban-born, Chicago-raised guitarist and singer Eddie Turner how he ended up in Colorado about five decades ago, and he says, “It’s actually pretty simple. I saw the band Zephyr when I was in high school, and I was just like, ‘Wow, what an amazing band! I just kind of said to myself, ‘I m going to join that band one day.’”
In the early ’70s, Turner moved to Boulder to study liberal arts at the University of Colorado, and after playing in the band Mother Earth, he did finally get that guitar spot in Zephyr in 1980, four years after the death of guitarist and co-founder Tommy Bolin. Turner appears on the band’s final album, 1982’s
Singer had hits such as Personality, Lawdy Miss Clawdy and Stagger Lee
The Louisiana native in 1998 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
He was a forerunners of rock ’n roll genre alongside Fats Domino and David Bartholomew
Outside of his music Price had a number of businesses including a Southern food line, construction in New York and a New York City club called Turntable
Kenneth Gamble, one-half of the legendary songwriting/production team Gamble & Huff, tells
Billboard that Price was “a great dude who helped me, Leon [Huff] and Thom Bell a lot in the early days” when the three played as a band at Loretta’s Hi-Hat club in New Jersey where Price sometimes performed.
“We had fun competing with Lloyd, who had a funky band, Gamble continues. Not only was he a talented singer and performer, Lloyd was also a skillful songwriter: ‘Personality’ was a monster of a song as well as others like the slow drag ‘Just Because.’ Always positive and uplifting, Lloyd was a fearless and independent force . an original.”
