Residents, businesses invited to apply
PAWTUCKET – With funding from a new $100,000 grant, Pawtucket-based Groundwork Rhode Island will be planting 140 trees in areas of Pawtucket and Central Falls this spring and fall and is asking the community for help identifying spots.
“We were super excited that we could help Pawtucket and Central Falls,” Amelia Rose, executive director of Groundwork R.I., told The Breeze. “Leandro (Castro) is already overwhelmed by the response from different organizations and residents that want trees.”
Castro, program coordinator, said, “We’re getting so many applications from areas that have a high tree canopy cover, and that’s fine, but we want to make sure we … zoom in on the ones that need it the most.”

Editorial: Time to put aside politics and be ready to govern
The end of a long local election season comes as a welcome relief for campaign-weary suburbanites remember, we also had a state and national election in November and signals a new focus for members of park, library, school, township and municipal bodies. It’s time to govern.
Candidates who won seats in last week’s election and soon will be sworn into office, as well as current board members in the middle of their terms, now must put aside the campaign mindset of the last four months. The time for rhetoric, criticizing opponents and making campaign promises is over. Now, elected officials must get down to the business of working as part of a team and leading their community.

In a letter to Senate President Don Harmon, House Speaker Chris Welch and leaders of the Latino and Black caucuses, groups including the Chicago Urban League and Latino Policy Forum stop short of endorsing a bill proposed by Lightfoot to elect only a few members of the board, allowing the mayor to continue to appoint most.
But the letters emphasize the importance of certain clauses that are in Lightfoot’s bill, but not the CTU’s. Included are steps to help undocumented immigrants have a voice, limits on campaign contributions and a requirement that any candidate have prior service on a Local School Council.
