Professor Ezra Vogel s contribution - Tao Wenzhao

Tao WenzhaoResearcher, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Though Professor Ezra Vogel has passed away, he will always be remembered and venerated in Chinese academic circles. He not only made fruitful academic achievements in China and Japan studies, to which few foreign scholars can compare, but he also carried forward the tradition of “study for application” adopted by Professor John King Fairbank, former director and founder of the Harvard University Fairbank Center for East Asian Research (now Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies). He promoted the development of U.S. relations with China and Japan, and won international acclaim and respect in so doing.

[Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn] Professor Ezra Vogel was a man of enlightenment: erudite and tolerant, aspiring to wisdom and pursuing truth. Anything is Possible When China and the United States Choose to Cooperate 1 Anything is Possible When China and the United States Choose to Cooperate -Remarks by Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng at Vision China 2021/01/28 Friends, Good to see you all here. I would like to thank China Daily for providing us with this important opportunity for discussion. As the new year has begun, and a new U.S. administration was just sworn in, it is particularly timely and meaningful for us to gather here to explore the future of China-U.S. relations. Last year was extremely challenging. The world was hit by the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, and China-U.S. relations suffered the worst setback of the last forty years. Despite all these, as a Chinese proverb says, Every new year brings new beginnings and possibilities. I sincerely hope that the new year of 2021 will bring a new start to the world and to China-U.S. relations.

David Vogel, adjunct lecturer of psychology at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts, always remembers the way his father looked longingly toward the Chinese mainland, while the two were on the Hong Kong side of the divide in the mid-1960s.
