Scientists urge No10 to ensure Brits get their second dose of Oxford vaccine after 12 weeks

Matt Hancock was today urged to ensure every vulnerable Briton gets their second dose of Oxford University’s coronavirus vaccine within 12 weeks amid fears they may receive less protection if their top-up is delayed. A landmark study last night showed a single dose of the jab made alongside drug giant AstraZeneca was 76 per cent effective at preventing coronavirus symptoms after three months. But researchers admitted they are still not sure whether the single dose offers any protection past the 12-week mark when the second jab must be given under the UK s roll-out plans. Layla Moran, the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Covid, called on the Health Secretary to guarantee the most vulnerable will not miss out on doses.

Professor Ian Young s role in fight against virus questioned

TUV leader Jim Allister has questioned whether Northern Ireland s chief scientific adviser should be allowed to remain in post. The MLA asked Health Minister Robin Swann whether it is tenable for Professor Ian Young to play such a significant role in the pandemic response, despite the fact that a public inquiry found he misled a coroner investigating the death of a child in a Northern Ireland hospital. Claire Roberts, who died from hyponatraemia caused by fluid mismanagement, was one of five children whose deaths were examined by the Hyponatraemia Inquiry. In a subsequent explosive report, chair of the inquiry Mr Justice O Hara said that Professor Young - who was appointed as an independent expert to review Claire s treatment - had misled a coroner examining the nine-year-old girl s death.
