In a webinar hosted by Free Market Foundation, a group of experts have disapproved and warned that the National Health Insurance (NHI) will not be able to deliver improved health outcomes for the majority of citizens and this may damage existing systems put in place.
Chairperson in the field of Social Security Systems Administration and Management Studies at the Wits School of Governance, Professor Alex van den Heever says the pandemic has revealed the problems that already known by the country s health system and that the NHI proposal is not looking to address them in any fundamental way.

CAPE TOWN - SAâs positivity rate had climbed past 10 percent which is well above the WHOâs recommended levels.
On Monday, South Africa reported 2,383 new Covid-19 cases with 23,352 tests conducted in the last 24 hours â representing a 10.2% positivity rate. A further 72 Covid-19 related deaths were reported, bringing total fatalities to 55,874 to date.
For nearly a month, the country has seen a sharp increase in positive coronavirus cases. Health experts have called for the government to introduce tighter restrictions in order to mitigate the impact of the third wave of infections.
Van der Heever also expressed concern about the late discovery that COVID-19 was an airborne virus.

JOHANNESBURG: Achieving herd immunity against the COVID-19 may be unrealistic due to the mutations of the virus that causes it, South African experts have said, as they called for long-term vaccination strategies amid uncertainty about current vaccine efficacy. Many governments are targeting herd immunity, but it is unachievable in the same way it is unachievable for flu, said Professor Alex van den Heever, health and social security systems specialist of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) School of Governance.
