Integrity guides the actions of ethical journalists, or at least that is the way it should be. Honorable journalism stems from the Society of Professional Journalistsâ code of ethics, and this semester I learned how to uphold these principles. Â
Seek Truth and Report It
The marching band members experienced many emotions when their Homecoming performance was canceled last semester due to an asymptomatic COVID-19 case. I gathered more negative quotes than I did positive ones. UNK Communications received upset phone calls from students and parents.
I reported on UNKâs COVID-19 policies in the past, and I knew there was more to the story.
Ottoville native recognized by Society of Professional Journalists
ATHENS Ottoville native Bryce Hoehn, a senior at Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, was a finalist in the Society of Professional Journalists’ regional Mark of Excellence awards for his column in The New Political about how progressivism is a winning strategy.
The awards recognize student journalists for their reporting and opinion writing.

Dallas Voice Senior Staff Writer David Taffet, pictured inset with his late husband Brian Cross, won first place at the Fort Worth SPJ’s First Amendment Awards for his story on Daniel Zarda, a plaintiff in the precedent-setting Supreme Court ruling in ‘Bostock v. Clayton County’ last year.
Dallas Voice Senior Staff Writer David Taffet has won first place in the Community Journalism category of the Fort Worth Society of Professional Journalists’ 2021 First Amendment Awards. Taffet was recognized for his article, “Donald Zarda recognized by medical organization,”
published Sept. 11, 2020. Judges wrote, “This feature personalizes the compelling story of some prominent advocates for employment rights for the LGBTQ communities.”

Several WKU students were honored as winners and finalists in this year’s SPJ Region 5 Mark of Excellence awards.
Honorees were announced at the Society of Professional Journalists’ virtual regional conference on April 10. SPJ Region 5 includes Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana. Winners in each category advance to the national SPJ competition.
