Goa Liberation Day 2020: A 36-hour Operation Vijay That Changed The History Of Goa
Goa Liberation Day is observed on December 19 in India every year as it was the day when Goa was freed from 450 years of Portuguese rule
While India got independence on August 15, 1947, Goa was still under Portuguese rule. However, on December 19, 1961, after a series of futile negotiations, a brief military operation of 36 hours led to the liberation of Goa and forced Portugal to concede after 450 years of rule. Since then, this date is observed as Goa Liberation Day.

Prez urged to highlight Nehru’s brave role in liberating Goa
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 16 December 2020 19:44 IST
President of India Ram Nath Kovind has been urged to play a parental role and highlight the role India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru played in liberating Goa.
The President is visiting Goa this week on 19
th December to launch yearlong celebration of 60
th anniversary of Goa’s liberation, organised by BJP-led Goa government.
The appeal has been made by Dakshinayan Goa, a body of writers, thinkers, intellectuals, social activists etc, in the background of some top BJP leaders consistently making a statement that Liberation of Goa was delayed by 14 years due to faulty policy of Nehru.
