School Board pushes for new elementary school in Fredericksburg

School Board pushes for new elementary school in Fredericksburg The Fredericksburg City Council and the city’s School Board are discussing building a new school in the city. According to the letter sent to the council by the city School Board, schools have been experiencing overcrowding over the last few years. In the letter, the national average for a Kindergarten through fifth-grade elementary school is 403 students. Fredericksburg two elementary schools have easily surpassed that number in the 2019-2020 school year. Hugh Mercer Elementary, which has almost 1,000 students. Lafayette Upper Elementary has nearly 800 students. These counts illustrate that both schools have the biggest class size out of 1,185 elementary schools in Virginia, the letter states. Mercer has the largest first and second-grade classes, while Lafayette has the state’s largest third, fourth, and fifth-grade classes.

Fredericksburg City Council meetings to resume in-person, masks still required

Fredericksburg City Council meetings to resume in-person, masks still required Fredericksburg officials will once again face the public as the city council is set to resume in-person public meetings on May 25. Attendees must wear a mask, according to a city spokeswoman, and those who want to watch the meeting from home still have that option. I wanted to share this update regarding the May 25th Council Meeting: Fredericksburg City Council in-person meetings resume, but with continued remote access for participants and viewers. The City Council will hold this meeting in person, and in-person attendance by members of the public is permitted, within the seating capacity of City Council Chambers with social distancing measures in place.  Face coverings are required for all attendees. Due to the reduced seating capacity and the continued presence of COVID-19 in the community, the public is encouraged to access the meeting through the broadcast on Cox Channel 84 and Verizon Channel 4

Health care official and youth mentor Xavier Richardson honored for years of service to Fredericksburg area

A caravan of classic and new, shiny cars honked their way around downtown Fredericksburg late Saturday morning, with music playing from speakers on a trailer and a police escort leading the way. People out wandering the sidewalks and driving in cars paused, watched the procession then went back to their business. Others waited on sidewalks to wave and cheer the motorcade, which included a school bus loaded with cheering people and a souped-up fire truck with revelers seated atop it. The caravan also included a silver convertible with its top down. Perched atop the back seat sat a bald, spectacled man wearing a blue suit with red pinstripes and a red bowtie. He smiled and waved as the car passed through the city streets.
