Bureau of Land Management releases analysis of proposed improvements to Kuna Cave

Bureau of Land Management releases analysis of proposed improvements to Kuna Cave BOISE, Idaho – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released the draft Kuna Cave Recreation Site Improvement Environmental Assessment and is inviting public review of proposed enhancements to the popular site located about 5 miles south of Kuna. The proposal calls for improvements to road and parking area access, renovating the entrance ladder for safety, and installing a grate to deter dumping and vandalism. The proposal does not include closing off the cave entrance to public entry. “The BLM appreciates Kuna Cave’s importance to the local community and these proposed actions aim to enhance both public access and safety,” said Amanda Hoffman, Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area Manager. “This effort is an example of how the BLM is working to improve recreational opportunities on public lands.”

Illegal shooting of protected animals more common than thought

On the first day of a new project to study the long-billed curlew, North America’s largest shorebird, ornithologist Jay Carlisle came across something upsetting: a dead curlew with a bullet hole through his head. It was 2009, and populations of the knobby-kneed bird with an eight-inch beak were struggling in southwestern Idaho, though no one was sure why. Shooting these birds is illegal under federal law, but Carlisle, who’s the research director of the Intermountain Bird Observatory, a project of Boise State University, soon found out that it was a common occurrence.
