At the end of a long street where early mid-century homes reach Ferguson Road is an inconspicuous corner house with a bakery sign on the front porch. Many neighbors’ display signs that “Welcome,” but nothing says welcome like a bakery.
It’s an unusual thing to have a bakery within walking distance in a Dallas neighborhood. And after some internet digging and one online order later, I wanted to find out more about the men behind the boules.
Operating under Texas Cottage Food Law, Crest Ridge Farms Bakery will soon celebrate their third anniversary as an artisan microbakery. The bakery name is an ode to a time when Todd Crane and Bill DeLoach tried to raise chickens in the backyard. Years ago, in their kitchen, a friend was trying Crane’s yeast rolls when she suggested he try to sell them. He laughed at the thought and said, “Then it becomes work!” Baking has always been a hobby.

The Dallas City Council elections are May 1; early voting starts Monday. All 14 council seats are contested, and three will see new faces as incumbents have reached term limits. The other 11 incumbents face challengers. This is the third of 14 stories on the races, which kicked off with coverage of the three open seats: in Districts 11, 2 and 13. The rest will be featured in ascending numerical order.

Earlier this month, over 50 candidates in 14 contested Dallas City Council races had to file their latest campaign finance reports, documenting their fundraising and spending over the last several months.
The Dallas Morning News has hit on some of the bigger takeaways from these records. Almost $900,000 has been pumped into contests that will determine the makeup of the city council, with Mayor Eric Johnson spared from having to run for re-election until 2023. Big-name donors who have previously backed the mayor are now supporting challenges to three incumbent city council members who voted against Johnson last fall in a battle over police overtime funding a sign that public safety concerns (and the mayor’s strained relationships with many of his colleagues) are driving forces this election
High-style high-rise opens in Dallas’ Arts District
Atelier apartment tower is the latest luxury living addition in downtown Dallas

Step through the Flora Street doors of the new Atelier tower in downtown Dallas, and you’ll find an exhibit hall filled with artworks.
That’s not the usual welcome at a high-rise apartment building. But the Atelier is the first such rental tower in Dallas’ Arts District.
“We wanted to tie into the Arts District,” said John Vranac, property manager for the tower, which is holding its grand opening this week. “When you first walk in, it makes you feel like you are in a museum.”
