The start of the weekend series in the KBO sees the league in much the same place as it was at the start of the week. Last year s five playoff teams are joined by the Landers and Lions to form a seven-team tier of contenders. The Landers and Lions jointly lead the group, but both lost Thursday, so the rest of that pack remains no more than 2.5 games out of first place. The Landers loss was the most crushing, as they blew leads to the Wiz in both the seventh and eighth innings before losing in the 10th on a Sung Woo Jang walkoff double. Friday s action should be rain-free and features an unusual mix of starters. Six come into the day with ERAs of 3.81 or better while the other four own ERAs of 5.02 or worse, with none coming anywhere close to the league average of 4.59.

Does crime pay?
Wall Street Crime and Punishment is a weekly series by Benzinga s Phil Hall chronicling the bankers, brokers and financial ne’er-do-wells whose ambition and greed takes them in the wrong direction.
During the early 1960s, Americans were captivated by a larger-than-life Texan who fleeced the federal government and the banking industry while boasting of connections in the highest levels of Washington D.C. and leaving a pile of bodies in the wake of his chicanery.
Indeed, had Billie Sol Estes never lived, it would have been impossible for any creative writer to invent him he was a gregarious nightmare of financial legerdemain and emotional complexities, wrapped with a rich Lone Star State twang.

Thursday s KBO slate had everything from a shutout to a shootout. 21-year-old righty Tae In Won continued his breakout season, striking out eight in seven scoreless innings to outduel Odrisamer Despaigne as the Lions extended their lead atop the standings to 2.5 games with a 4-0 win. Slightly further north in Seoul, the Heroes scored 12 runs in the first four innings and then withstood a charge by the Bears to finish as 14-13 victories. Premium fantasy options were available all over both lineups, with Ji Young Lee, Byeong Woo Jeon and Jose Fernandez all grabbing three hits and five RBI. Elsewhere, Young Kyu Kim and Nick Kingham combined to allow just two earned runs in 11.1 innings, with Kim s Dinos eventually emerging as 4-2 victors.

We re approximately 30 games into the KBO season, and at least a bit of a hierarchy has started to emerge even with the entire league separated by just 6.5 games. Three teams that missed the playoffs last season (the Tigers, Eagles and Giants) occupy the final three spots in the standings. Those three are all getting outscored by at least half a run per game, as are the Heroes, who ve climbed up to seventh after a very poor start. That group is all at least five games back of the league lead, with a group of six teams separated by 3.5 games leading the pack.
