Buoyed by a recent windfall of tax revenue, Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration announced last week that it has already contributed $5.8 billion to New Jersey’s public-worker pension fund for the new fiscal year that began on July 1.
The hefty pension payment was made in a lump sum last week, instead of in separate installments at the close of each quarter of the fiscal year, which the state has generally done since 2017.

Last month’s legislative primary in New Jersey saw record fundraising by candidates statewide in a primary, and independent spending organizations kicked in essentially a new June election high on ads to boost candidates in a handful of districts.
Candidates took in more than $37.4 million, the most ever, according to an analysis by the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) of post-election spending reports submitted through June 30.
When adjusting for inflation, however, that would be the third-highest total, behind $40.9 million in 2011 and $38.3 million in 2017. Still, the 2021 primary total is preliminary and likely to increase, as some candidates did not file their post-election reports by the June 28 deadline.
Murphy Test Drives a Campaign Stop in the Arms of Political Behemoth Essex By Fred Snowflack | July 1, 2021, 4:23 pm | in Edward Edwards
WEST ORANGE – It had all the trappings of a formal campaign kickoff.
Phil Murphy and Sheila Oliver both spoke, as did LeRoy Jones, the state chair of the Democratic Committee. Also speaking were state legislators Teresa Ruiz and Britnee Timberlake.
Senate President Steve Sweeney was in the audience – at least in the beginning – as were such Essex County honchos as Joe DiVincenzo, the county executive, Armando Fontoura, the sheriff, and Chris Durkin, the county clerk.
Officially, today’s event at the Mayfair Farms catering hall was a gathering of African-American women for Murphy. It included a private meeting, a luncheon and a press event that seemed very much like a pep rally.
