Hands off Grace: Mugabes
BY EVERSON MUSHAVA/MOSES MATENGA
THE late former President Robert Mugabe’s family yesterday rubbished moves by a Zvimba traditional leader to summon former First Lady Grace Mugabe to appear before his traditional court on a charge of “improper” burial of the country’s former strongman.
Mugabe, who was deposed by the military in a coup in November 2017, died a bitter man in September 2019 at a hospital in Singapore.
The period leading to his burial was marred by haggling over his place of interment between his family and the government. The family buried him at his rural home in Zvimba, insisting it was his wish, while the government wanted him buried at the National Heroes Acre, where its centre-piece marque depicts him as the ultimate hero.

EXILED nephew to late former President Robert Mugabe, Patrick Zhuwao has sensationally claimed President Emmerson Mnangagwa was behind the current bid to have his predecessor’s remains exhumed from a Zvimba homestead grave in the belief the one-time Zimbabwe ruler was buried with a spectre that could give the incumbent electoral victory in 2023.
Zhuwao was speaking on SABC Wednesday night.
Mugabe, who was toppled by Mnangagwa with military assistance 2017, died in a Singaporean hospital September 2019 and was buried in his rural homestead.
Apparently acting on the ex-leader’s deathbed instructions, Mugabe’s family defied a government position for his body to be interred at the National Heroes Acre.
Emmerson Mnangagwa
OPPOSITION National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader Lovemore Madhuku says President Emmerson Mnangagwa has displayed more greed for power more than his predecessor Robert Mugabe.
This follows the highly condemned passing into substantive law, of Constitutional Amendment Bill No.2 by the national leader helped by a pliant Zanu PF dominated parliament.
The law is seen as an attempt by the Zimbabwean incumbent to centre power around himself.
Under the new law, candidates in future presidential elections will no longer be obliged to select running mates.
The controversial law also grants the sitting president the prerogative to handpick judges to the country’s courts, a departure from the old system in which the jurists were first subjected to public interviews to inquire into their suitability to hold the esteemed jobs.
