Authorities in Belarus look set to use new “anti-Nazi” legislation to intensify their crackdown on independent media and civil society.
New and amended laws on “combatting extremism” and “preventing the rehabilitation of Nazism” have raised alarm from civil society actors in Belarus, who believe that they could be used to target anti-government opposition in the country.
The warning comes as the leading independent news portal in the country, TUT.by, remains offline following raids by the Belarusian authorities earlier this week.

US Secretary of State Blinken visits Kiev amidst ongoing tensions with Russia
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday in Kiev, pledging Washington’s support as the former Soviet republic continues its military escalation with Moscow.
The visit, the first by a senior Biden administration official, comes on the heels of Russia’s announcement on April 22 that it was withdrawing the bulk of its forces near the Ukrainian border as it had completed its military drills there.

Who’s who in the Giuliani-Ukraine search warrants?
The Justice Department’s criminal investigation into Rudy Giuliani involves an international cast of characters: Trump White House allies, Republican lawyers, Ukrainian oligarchs, diplomats, right-wing journalists and other figures who aren’t household names.
The probe burst into public view last week when authorities raided Giuliani’s home and office in New York City, where he was mayor two decades ago. Investigators were armed with a search warrant that Giuliani’s lawyer said mentioned an investigation into potentially illegal foreign lobbying.
Giuliani has denied all wrongdoing and claimed the investigation itself is unconstitutional, and he said on Fox News last week that the “Department of Injustice” should be “investigated for blatantly violating my constitutional rights.”
