New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick will not accept Presidential Medal of Freedom
Bill Belichick said Monday in part the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award.

He issued this statement explaining his decision:
“Recently I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered by out of respect for what the honor represents and admiration for prior recipients. Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award. Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom and democracy. I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots team. Republican megadonor and casino mogul Sheldon Adelson died on Monday night due to complications related to his treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
According to a statement from Las Vegas Sands Corp., the gaming corporation that Adelson founded in 1988 and where he served as Chairman and CEO, the multibillionaire passed away at his Malibu home. He was 87.
Adelson leaves a legacy as one of President Donald Trump’s biggest donors.
According to filings, the megadonor and his wife had funneled $218 million to Republicans and conservative groups during the 2020 election cycle alone.
In 2018, following copious midterm donations, Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Adelson’s wife, Miriam Adelson an honor bestowed on those who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors

The death of 87-year-old billionaire and Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson announced Tuesday prompted a flurry of tributes from conservatives, who lauded the impact the casino mogul had on American and Israeli politics.
Adelson s Las Vegas Sands company announced Tuesday that the Republican power broker had died from complications related to treatment for non-Hodgkin s Lymphoma.
Adelson and wife Miriam were the largest donors to outgoing President Donald Trump, and since 2010 donated more than $525 million to federal political campaigns and committees, according to OpenSecrets.
Adelson was awarded the President Medal of Freedom by Trump in 2018, though the president later criticized the businessman for not donating more to his 2020 re-election bid.
