Field s Department Store Continues to Bring Fond Memories

Field s Department Store in Jackson has been long gone, and anyone who shopped there has a favorite memory. My favorite? I was one of the first people to buy a copy of Black Sabbath s debut album back in 1970, when it was released on my birthday, February 13. Field s had a great collection of the latest rock n roll albums in the basement. Sadly, many of my memories of Field s have faded, but I do recall enjoying scouring through the many items – and records – in that basement. For 122 years, Field s Department Store served Jackson. Leonard H. Field – cousin of another famous Field Marshall) was part owner in a store named Stone, Field & Wakefield in Massachusetts. He bought the whole business in 1869, and moved to Jackson. Why Jackson? At the time, a total of six railroads were bringing travelers, tourists, and businessmen to Jackson, more than any other in the entire state. This appealed to Field s business sense.

War hero Custer is Monroe s Big Lie

War hero Custer is Monroe s Big Lie The Monroe News This past week Liz Cheney was removed from her position as House GOP chair and Elise Stefanik has since taken that position. The reason why Liz Cheney was removed from her post was because she would not peddle Trump’s “Big Lie,” that the election was stolen from him. The fact of the matter is, President Trump lost the election. The only thing that was stolen from him was his pride. Elise Stefanik is just a modern day Libby Custer, a woman who will defend the honor of a man who has made a mockery of the United States government and our Constitution. Libby campaigned for her husband all over the world in order to change the narrative of his infamous legacy. She was able to get support from President Taft to honor him with the statue so that we could all be reminded of the “Big Lie” for the rest of our lives.

Muralist Charles Key Wants to Teach Kids That Art Can Be a Way to Dream Find Key’s artwork in the Napier area and elsewhere around the city Tweet By Charles KeyPhoto: Daniel Meigs Growing up in South Central Los Angeles in the ’80s, Charles Key didn’t have a lot to do. The neighborhood, he says, was infested with gangs, and his parents wouldn’t let him leave the yard. But his imagination was active. His father was an artist, and the walls of South Central were covered in graffiti.  Charles KeyPhoto: Daniel MeigsAfter the L.A. riots of the early ’90s, Key’s parents moved the family to Nashville. He graduated from Antioch High School, and worked various jobs after, including as a chef. But art was always in his back pocket — a calling, he says, and a ministry.

Former President Taft was at Elmira College s tense 1919 commencement

View Comments Wednesday, June 11, 1919, was a day of excitement in Elmira. Elmira College’s 64th annual commencement exercises were held at the Park Church.  Fifty-eight young women received their degrees in a packed church sanctuary, and former U.S. President William Howard Taft delivered the commencement address. An undertone of tension also pervaded the city as the major strike at the Willys-Morrow plant, which began on May 6, continued. On Wednesday evening, the Mozart Theater had been engaged by the Central Trades and Labor Assembly, with Frank D. Hawley, of the U.S. Department of Labor, speaking to employees and employers on the country’s reconstruction problems. There was speculation that Taft might also speak at the Mozart that evening.
