WASHINGTON (CN) The Food and Drug Administration approved Moderna’s vaccine for Covid-19 Friday evening, making it the second vaccine authorized for use in the United States, a nation which continues to reel from the respiratory virus that has now killed over 310,000.
In conjunction with the White House’s Operation Warp Speed program, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FDA are now poised to begin the coordination of vaccine distribution efforts as soon as next week.
General Gustave Perna, the lead on Operation Warp Speed’s vaccine distribution arm, said earlier this week that shipment might include six million doses.

Vice President Mike Pence received the coronavirus vaccine Friday morning an on-camera event that the Trump administration says is part of federal efforts to build confidence among the public in the vaccine s safety and efficacy.
Along with the vice president, second lady Karen Pence and Surgeon General Jerome Adams were administered the vaccine, which has received emergency use authorization and is being rolled out nationwide.
Each were told they will receive a shot record confirming they received the vaccine, were reminded they need to return for a second shot in three weeks, and were also warned they could have a sore arm.

Mr Pence s wife and Surgeon General Jerome Adams also received the jab at the televised White House event.
On Monday the US began rolling out the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
The first vaccine to be approved in the US, it offers up to 95% protection against Covid-19.
