A report to the Victorian coroner also showed that as the use of cocaine in Victoria increased in the past 10 years, deaths from using the drug rose 20-fold. Just one user died from the drug in 2010, while 20 people overdosed and died in 2019.

O’Brien was appointed by Mayor James J. Fiorentini and has already been asked to hire women and recruit minorities. He is scheduled to be sworn in during a ceremony Monday morning at the Water Street Fire Station. The mayor said he believes O’Brien will continue the progress on upgrading fire stations, replacing fire trucks and other equipment and lifting firefighter morale. “After spending many hours in interviews, I am confident that Deputy Chief Robert O’Brien has the necessary skill set to continue this progress and move the department forward.
