Duke s Owen Caputo ranked second on the team in points with 12 goals and eight assists.
After an offseason headlined by impact transfers and the return of several program staples, Duke is No. 1 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Men’s Preseason Top 20.
There’s a potential super team brewing in Durham. Michael Sowers, the ankle-breaking Princeton transfer and US Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of the Year who stockpiled points with ease before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the 2020 season, joins an attack that will also welcome Brennan O’Neill, the top recruit in his class. Sowers’ Princeton teammate, Phil Robertson, also transferred in to team with his brother, Joe, who is healthy after tearing his ACL last spring. Dyson Williams brings even more firepower to the table.
Orange supporters won’t be happy to see the ‘Cuse men behind Duke, but that was an inevitability after the offseason they had bringing in the best college player in the world in Michael Sowers, No. 1 incoming freshman Brennan O’Neill, and some other important pieces to shore up their face-off and goalie deficiencies.
Syracuse did not share a similar offseason on the transfer market, mostly because the roster was already loaded with so much talent that the big transfers looked elsewhere. That talent, which includes US Lacrosse Magazine preseason All-Americans Brendan Curry and Drake Porter, is the reason why the Orange still find themselves just off the top of the rankings.

Syracuse, N.Y. The Syracuse men’s lacrosse team was ranked No. 1 in the country when the coronavirus stopped play last spring, and when action starts again in 2021 the Orange is projected to pick up almost where it left off.
SU comes in at No. 2 in the Nike/U.S. Lacrosse preseason poll released Wednesday. The Orange trails only ACC rival Duke.
