During a late-night debate and decision, councillors voted unanimously to adopt a motion introduced by Coun. Troy Davies. It read in part: “Be it resolved that the Saskatoon City Solicitor’s Office be instructed to cause an application to be brought in the Court of Queen’s Bench to determine whether Councillor Darren Hill has ceased to be qualified to remain a member of council.” After the delayed civic election last Nov. 13, all council candidates were expected to disclose their campaign contributions by Feb. 16.

STC planning to vaccinate teachers Friday at SaskTel Centre clinic

First it was frontline police officers. Now it’s the teachers’ turn. The Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) has been making use of its SaskTel Centre vaccine clinic, with Tribal Chief Mark Arcand stating the STC is taking a proactive approach. With educators soon to be eligible for the vaccine, the STC is stepping up. “Right now, it doesn’t matter if you’re a teacher, non-teacher, police officer, whatever. You have to pre-register with the Saskatoon Tribal Council,” Arcand said Monday. “Based on what were hearing through (the Saskatchewan Health Authority) or the province, teachers will be eligible as of Wednesday … What we’re doing is pre-registering and pre-booking for Friday, April 30.”

Saskatoon entrepreneurs launch pedal pub, first of its kind in city

A group of Saskatonians are bringing pedal pubs to the Bridge City. (pedalpub.com) There’s a new way to travel around Saskatoon’s downtown on your next summer night out. Pedal pubs are here in the city. The pubs seat 15 and bookings are now open for the launch, which is scheduled for June 1. One of the four owners, Tate Porter, joined the Brent Loucks Show on Monday morning. “(It) is a pedal-powered patio. So you get groups together, you bike downtown from pub to pub while listening to your favourite tunes,” Porter said. “The bikes a pretty big bike. It’s a 15-seater, but obviously with COVID regulations right now, we are limited to having eight people per bike.”

VIDO-InterVac vaccine tweaked to tackle variants

The COVID-19 vaccine developed in the lab at Saskatoon’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) at the University of Saskatchewan is now better equipped to fend off emerging variants. “We now looked at some of these new variants and adjusted our vaccine to it,” said Dr. Volker Gerdts, VIDO’s director and CEO. “In fact, here at VIDO we are one of the few places in Canada that currently has (U.K. and South African) variants. We can now assess our own vaccine but also vaccines from others to see how well they work for these new variants.” The VIDO vaccine was given the green light from Health Canada to begin human trials in December.
