There were scenes of emotion atthe Sekondi Prisons yesterday when 15 young inmates serving variousterms due to their inability to pay fines imposed on them by the courts walked to freedom.
Zeal Environmental Technologies Limited (ZETL), an oil field mining and industrial waste management company,intervened to pay the fines totalling GH¢30,000,for the inmates who were serving prison terms of between eight and 24 months.
Individual fines slapped on them by the courts ranged between GH¢1,200 and GH¢6,000. Some of the freed inmates shed tears openly asthey told theirstories. It was all joy in the end when the prison officers handed them their dresses and told them they were free to go home.

A high level conference today concluded the 36 months’ Programme “Promoting a human rights compliant criminal justice system in the Republic of Moldova” (2018 -2021), which formed part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the country (2017-2020), implemented by the Council of Europe and funded by the Government of Norway.
The Programme aimed to ensure coherent criminal justice policy through humanisation, resocialisation and restorative justice, and to enhance prison management, the provision of health care in prison, and the probation system with a view to the resocialisation of offenders.

Seven more persons who were infected with COVID-19 have succumbed to the virus, the Director-General of Health Services confirmed.
According to the Department of Government Information, total lives claimed by the virus outbreak in Sri Lanka now stand at 297.
One of the victims was identified as an 86-year-old from Colombo 06. He has passed away on January 26 on admission to Iththepana District Hospital. The cause of death was cited as diabetes and high blood pressure exacerbated by COVID-19 infection.
Another man, aged 73, meanwhile fell victim to the virus today (January 28) at his home in Nittambuwa area. COVID-19 infection, heart attack, diabetes and high blood pressure have been recorded as the cause of death.
