The New Jersey Assembly is moving quickly to address the continuing problem of sexual assaults at the state’s only women’s prison, as well as to better the treatment of inmates throughout the corrections system.
On Tuesday, six bills cleared Assembly committees in rapid succession, poising them for final passage by the full house Thursday. Four arose from the U.S. Department of Justice’s scathing April 2020 report on sexual assaults at the Edna Mahan Women’s Correctional Facility, a daylong hearing two Assembly committees held in light of physical assaults in January that left at least two inmates seriously injured and a subsequent tour by lawmakers of the Hunterdon County prison last month.

Transgender woman sues District of Columbia after Department of Corrections houses her in a men’s unit
A transgender woman is suing the District of Columbia after its Department of Corrections placed her in a men’s jail unit despite her telling officials she identifies as a woman, according to a class-action lawsuit filed Tuesday.
Sunday Hinton was placed into DOC custody on April 26 on accusations of “unarmed burglary with the intent to steal twenty dollars,” the lawsuit says. When Hinton’s public defender asked for her to be moved to a women’s unit, the DOC gave Hinton the option of going to a men’s unit or “protective custody,” within a men’s unit, which the American Civil Liberties Union of DC says is essentially solitary confinement.

Threats from a possible federal takeover of New Jersey’s only women’s prison and inmate lawsuits are driving New Jersey’s efforts at reforming a culture that has allowed sexual assaults and harassment to continue unchecked for decades.
The coming reforms include body cameras for corrections officers, a system for monitoring officers’ behavior and an overhaul of policies, staffing and training as recommended by a consultant. But how effective they will be remains to be seen. Past efforts that included a zero-tolerance policy for sexual contact and officers’ training did not stop sexual assaults, which are just one glaring problem at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women.
Churchill County commissioners voted unanimously at their last meeting to acknowledge receipt of Resolution 1-2021 from the countyâs Planning Commission to adopt and approve the 2020 Master Plan.
Before voting on the resolution, commissioners heard from concerned residents about growth and other factors that could change the quality of life in Churchill County.
Commissioners conducted a public hearing before voting. Churchill County Associate Planner Dean Patterson said the master plan is updated every five years. He said Nevada Revised Statue 278 dictates the procedures for updating the plan.
The elements of the Master Plan includes housing and population, education, conservation and natural resources, hazards and hazard mitigation, historical preservation, economic development, recreation, transportation, public services and facilities, open space, land use and policy plan for public lands.
