Liechtenstein prince accused of shooting Romania's largest bear - Panorama

Liechtenstein prince accused of shooting Romania’s largest bear The Romanian NGO Agent Green and the Austrian NGO VGT alleged in a statement that the bear, who was called Arthur, was shot in March in a protected area of the Carpathian Mountains by Prince Emanuel von und zu Liechtenstein. According to the NGOs, the prince, who is a resident of Riegersburg in Austria, had been given special approval by the Romanian environment ministry to shoot a female bear that had been causing damage to farms in Ojdula. “But in reality, the prince did not kill the problem bear, but a male that lived deep in the woods and had never come close to localities,” the NGOs claim.

Investigation is underway after the prince killed Europe’s largest bear during a trophy hunt in Transylvania in March this year. The brown bear, Arthur, was 17 years old and probably the largest of its kind in Europe. Arthur was shot a month after a local farmer complained that a female bear was harassing his animals. Prince Emanuel, who lives in Austria, is said to have received a permit to kill a female bear following the complaints from the farmer in the village of Ojdula in Transylvania about the animal attacking his livestock. Instead, he shot what turned out to be a giant male bear. Nature conservationists criticized him. Gabriel Paun of the environmental organization, Agent Green, told the BBC that they have nothing against the prince personally, but they believe that the Romanian Hunters’ Association has made a mistake when

Prince probed over claims he killed Romania's largest bear

  •  Updated: 08/05/2021 - 17:27 Authorities in Romania have launched an investigation amid accusations Arthur, the largest bear in the country, was killed in March by a European prince. Romania is home to Europe’s biggest population of brown bears, officially around 6,000 although some scientists dispute these figures and officially banned trophy hunting in 2016. It now only grants hunting permits for “problematic” bears which are sold to trophy hunters. Official hunting documents seen by The Associated Press confirms that Prince Emanuel von und zu Liechtenstein was granted a four-day hunting permit in March in Romania s Covasna County and that on March 13 he “harvested” a 17-year-old brown bear, for which he allegedly paid €7,000.
