The State says Coetzee ran after Thabethe, who was then stabbed while lying helplessly on the ground.
Leon Coetzee, the man accused of murdering Thembinkosi Thabethe, after a furore over a WhatsApp message, has been denied bail.
Coetzee, who appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate s Court on Friday, is accused of stabbing Thabethe three times outside of his house in Green Acres Estate in Montana on 26 April.
Thabethe died in hospital on 1 May.
Thabethe, who also lives in the estate, went to confront Coetzee s wife about a message addressed to her on the estate s WhatsApp group.
Racism Latest: Pretoria North man in court for murder
A Pretoria North man is facing a murder charge after he allegedly killed a man following an incident of racism on a social media group.
A Sinoville man who is facing an apparently racism fuelled murder charge after allegedly killing a neighbour and calling black people “pigs” was denied bail in the Pretoria North Magistrates Court on Friday.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said the court had denied the bail application filed by Leon Lourens Coetzee, 54, of Sinoville in Pretoria North.
“It is alleged that Thabethe and Coetzee stayed in the same complex and belonged to a WhatsApp group that was created for all residents of the complex,” Mahanjana said.
EFF members forced their way into the Pretoria North Magistrate s Court on Friday where a man accused of stabbing Thembinkosi Thabethe to death is applying for bail.
The court entrances were closed on Friday, which angered the EFF members who then started kicking the gates, before lifting them off its rails and entering the court premises.
There were no police officers at the court at the time.
It s alleged Thabethe was stabbed three times by Leon Coetzee following an argument about a message on a WhatsApp group.
Both men lived in the Green Acres Estate in Montana.
Coetzee, who is applying for bail, alleged he acted in self-defence.
