UK Likely to See Summer Surge in Covid-19 Cases by Hannah Joy on April 23, 2021 at 10:22 AM
UK is more likely to see a summer surge in covid-19 cases, as many adults are yet to be vaccinated, said a British government advisory scientist.
On Wednesday, Professor Adam Finn, of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI), an independent expert advisory committee that advises health departments on immunization, said modelling shows coronavirus cases will rise in the summer as lockdown is relaxed, Xinhua news agency reported. The models that we ve seen on JCVI clearly point to a summer surge in cases as the lockdown is relaxed, because there are still many people in the adult population who ve not been immunized, he told the BBC.
Tips to Care for Your Liver During COVID-19 by Colleen Fleiss on April 23, 2021 at 10:29 PM
COVID-19 pandemic can be dangerous for people suffering from liver disease as they are at a higher risk of suffering from severe complications, say health experts.
A case in point is the earlier SARS epidemic, during which liver damage was observed in more than half of the afflicted patients.
Liver disease is a serious concern in India with more than 10 lakh cases being reported every year. Late diagnosis often leads to detection of the condition when it is at end-stage or liver cirrhosis has occurred, during which time it is difficult to treat and it could lead to death, says Rajiv Lochan, Lead Consultant HPB and Transplant Surgery, Aster RV Hospital.
Six-minute Walk Helps Monitor COVID-19 Patients at Home by Angela Mohan on April 21, 2021 at 7:12 PM
Citizens of Maharashtra were advised to check lung functioning using a six-minute walk test, which can be conducted inside house. District administrations will create awareness of the test.
A COVID-19 positive patient should check their oxygen level using an oxymeter before taking the test. Then the patient should walk for six minutes, without a pause, on an even surface with the oxymeter on the finger.
After six minutes, if the oxygen level does not go down the individual will be considered healthy. There is no need to worry even if the oxygen level dips by 1% or 2%. In this case, this exercise should be carried out twice a day to keep a vigil, an official said.
Novel Coronavirus May Not Affect Brain but Still Cause Damage by Angela Mohan on April 19, 2021 at 12:04 PM
Brain.
The study suggest that the neurological changes often seen in these patients may result from inflammation triggered by the virus in other parts of the body or the brain s blood vessels. We ve looked at more brains than other studies and we have used more techniques to search for the virus. The bottom line is that we find no evidence of viral RNA or protein in brain cells, said researcher James E. Goldman from Columbia University.
For the study, the research team examined the brains of 41 patients with Covid-19 who succumbed to the disease during their hospitalization. The patients ranged in age from 38 to 97, about half had been intubated and all had lung damage caused by the virus.
