Roberto Mata wanted to thank the team of healthcare workers that cared for him during the 47 days he spent battling COVID-19 in the Intensive Care Unit.
Mata, a Catholic deacon, visited The Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus for National Nurses Week Friday, May 7, about a year after his hospital stay.
According to a statement from The Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus, when Mata was discharged to his family his son Chris Mata said, “With how sick he was, there were many days we didn’t know if he was going to make it, but we kept our faith in God knowing he was in the best care.”
Ahren Joshua DeHart s parents thought their 13-month-old son was safe with a trusted family friend.
Instead, that man is now accused of fatally injuring the child in a “monstrous” moment that has left the family devastated, a family member said.
Ahren died April 16, days after he suffered injuries while being babysat by 24-year-old Marvin Rex Lake, according to El Paso Police Department and the DeHart family.
Lake was arrested on suspicion of capital murder.
Ahren will be remembered as a beautiful and loving boy who was always smiling, said Ahren s granduncle, Lawrence DeHart. He was very, very loved, DeHart said. His parents, their lives really revolved around him. For 20-year-olds, it s clear that they were destined to be parents. They loved him to death. Words can t express how devastating this whole thing is for us. I can t imagine what they (parents) are going through.

Roberto Mata gives his wife Mary Alice a kiss on the forehead by their Christmas tree.
CHAPARRAL, New Mexico Roberto and Mary Alice Mata, married for nearly 50 years, share smiles and hold onto each other’s hands inside their home. A Christmas tree is decorated with the names of family members, and photos of children and grandchildren cover an entire wall, with crosses scattered throughout.
The Matas fill their home in southern New Mexico with warmth and gratitude, a stark difference from the uncertainty and fear that has defined much of 2020.
The family is not immune from the year’s despair. In April, three family members tested positive for Covid-19. Roberto Mata spent more than six weeks in the ICU, as close to death as one can be.
