BRATTLEBORO â After spending several hours discussing the community safety report they commissioned, Select Board members stopped short of defining next steps. Town Manager Peter Elwell worried that trying to outline such actions at nearly 11 p.m. Tuesday would disrupt the process.
âMy strong suggestion is take the progress tonight and be grateful for it,â he said at the remote board meeting that started at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Elwell recommended taking up actions at the upcoming board meeting on Tuesday and possibly starting with a list of suggested actions that board member Daniel Quipp highlighted. The board agreed, cutting off conversation until next week.

BELLOWS FALLS â Finding a cop to fill several vacancies in the Bellows Falls Village Police Department has proven to be a major challenge, Municipal Manager Scott Pickup said this week.
Pickup, along with Police Chief David Bemis, gave the Bellows Falls Village Board of Trustees an update on staffing at the department Tuesday evening, and the outlook is pretty pessimistic.
According to Pickup, Bellows Falls isnât alone in its recruitment problems. He said while Bellows Falls has relied on âpoachingâ officers from other departments in the past, even those departments are having their own staffing problems.

BRATTLEBORO â After receiving a two-hour presentation on a 224-page report filled with recommendations aimed at improving community safety, Select Board members are absorbing the material and plan to pick it back up at upcoming meetings.
At a board meeting held remotely Tuesday with about 120 participants, Select Board Chairman Tim Wessel said some of the items will need to be addressed before elections and annual Representative Town Meeting in March. Board members agreed with his suggestion to develop a list of action items with categories related to timing in the coming weeks.

BRATTLEBORO â A report that looks at safety, danger and harm within policing and community safety systems urges action on a variety of measures.
âIt would be a great disservice and cause further harm to those who so bravely and vulnerably shared their stories, many of which invoke deep pain, fear and trauma, for this review process not to materialize actual change,â Emily Megas-Russell and Shea Witzberger wrote in the 224-page document released Friday. âOur community eagerly awaits the opportunity to explore what is possible in our town, and to get to work making it happen in ways that honor and build on the legacy of this process.â
