Felicia Flames Elizondo, a transgender woman and longtime AIDS survivor, died Saturday, May 15. She was 74. According to friends and social media posts, Ms. Elizondo was in hospice care in San Francisco at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Ms. Elizondo was a fixture in the San Francisco LGBTQ community for many years. What I remember about Felicia are her performances and how giving she was of her time and energy, Luis Gutierrez-Mock, a queer trans man, told the Bay Area Reporter in a phone interview. She was always down to raise money for friends, HIV prevention, and the trans community. Gutierrez-Mock said that he and Ms. Elizondo organized the San Francisco Trans March for many years.

Bay Area Reporter :: SF mayor appoints bi woman to lead homeless department

San Francisco Mayor London Breed on Thursday announced she has appointed a bisexual woman to lead the city s homeless department. Shireen McSpadden will become director of the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing beginning May 1, according to a news release. McSpadden currently serves as the executive director of the Department of Disability and Aging Services, which serves over 70,000 seniors, adults with disabilities, caregivers, and veterans every year. Joining McSpadden in HSH leadership will be Noelle Simmons, currently a deputy director at the Human Services Agency, and Cynthia Nagendra, currently the executive director at the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, the release stated. Simmons, who has led the Economic Support and Self-Sufficiency Division at the Human Services Agency for the last six years, will serve as the chief deputy at HSH. Joining Hearts pool party fundraiser returns this summer

(Photo by Russ Bowen-Youngblood) The pool deck parade of abs and skimpy swimsuits that is LGBTQ Atlanta’s social event of the summer is back. But expect a Joining Hearts main event that is smaller, safer and simpler. Organizers of the pool party in Piedmont Park, which raises funds for HIV organizations, said the event will return July 17. Last year, the main event fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic and a ban by Atlanta city officials on large outdoor events.  Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms lifted the event moratorium in late March. Joining Hearts then jumped at the chance to host the pool party – and a schedule of other social fundraising events later this year.
