JetBlue Airways’ decision to launch service from Miami International Airport (MIA) caps off a raft of network changes the company has undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic to respond to what it deems as “changing customer demand.”
In February 2021, JetBlue plans to introduce up to 14 daily flights from Miami to Boston Logan (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), New York JFK (JFK) and Newark International (EWR). The flights to Los Angeles will feature JetBlue’s Mint premium service, which the airline currently offers from its focus city in nearby Fort Lauderdale (FLL).
Fort Lauderdale is a long-standing focus city for JetBlue, and data from Aviation Week’s CAPA and OAG for the week of Dec. 14 show the airport is the airline’s second-largest base measured by seat deployment.
Snow fell from northern Virginia to parts of New England on Wednesday. It carried on north into the evening, sustaining a storm that was poised to drop as much as 2 feet of snow in some places by Thursday.
United Airlines had the most cancellations, calling off 103 flights. Southwest canceled 64 and JetBlue scrubbed 63. Delta and American canceled about 50 each, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware.
As far as airports go, Boston Logan had 131 canceled flights as of 7:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, while Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey had 123.
Most U.S. airlines have already announced flight waivers covering travel on Wednesday and Thursday. The destinations covered, travel dates and other fine print vary by airline and are likely to change with the storm s projected path and severity.
