BOSTON (AP) A federal judge has upheld a temporary admissions policy at Boston’s elite exam high schools, ruling against a parents group that said in a lawsuit it discriminated against white students and those of Asian descent.
“This court finds and rules that the plan is race-neutral, and that neither the factors used nor the goal of greater diversity qualify as a racial classification,” U.S. District Judge William Young in Boston wrote in the ruling released Thursday night. The ruling applies only to the current exam cycle.
The Boston School Committee last fall temporarily dropped the entrance exam for Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and the O’Bryant School of Math and Science because it was not safe to hold exams in-person during the pandemic.

Boston parent group to appeal after federal judge rules that admission plan for exam schools is ‘race neutral’

A group of Boston parents who challenged a new admissions plan for Boston’s exam schools during the COVID-19 pandemic says it will appeal after a federal court judge ruled that the plan was not discriminatory.
The Boston Parent Coalition for Academic Excellence (BPCAE) filed a lawsuit in February against the School Committee and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius, arguing that a new zip code policy for admission to the city’s three exam schools is discriminatory against white and Asian students.
In an email to supporters on Sunday, Murphy said: “I don t believe Zip Codes should be used to divide the City by race or ethnicity for admissions.”
She wrote: “I support using a fair and vetted standardized test, along with GPA s, for admission to Boston Latin Academy, the O Bryant School, and Boston Latin School…When elected, I will use my influence as an At-large City Councilor to make sure BPS returns to using a fair standardized test, vetted for bias, for admission to the exam schools next year.”
