WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President-elect Joe Biden has decided to nominate Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, a former union official, to serve as labor secretary, a source familiar with the plans told Reuters on Thursday.
Biden has also chosen Isabel Guzman to lead the Small Business Administration, the source said.
Walsh, currently in his second term as mayor of Boston, has fought hard to “rebuild the middle class, build a more inclusive, resilient economy, and fight for workers in his hometown,” the source said, adding that Walsh backed both a $15 minimum wage and paid family leave.
“Boston Mayor Marty Walsh will be an exceptional Labor secretary for the same reason he was an outstanding mayor: he carried the tools. As a longtime union member, Walsh knows that collective bargaining is essential to building back better by combating inequality, beating COVID-19 and expanding opportunities for immigrants, women and people of color,” Richard Trumka said in a statement Thursday.
“He will have the ear of the White House, the Cabinet and Congress as we work to increase union density and create a stronger, fairer America,” he added.

“With Joe Biden and Marty Walsh, we are setting our sights high, starting with passage of the PRO Act so the tens of millions of workers who want to form a union can do so freely and fairly,” Trumka added, referencing legislation that would strengthen workers’ protections to unionize.

Goal: Fire and arrest officer who reportedly bragged, on camera, about hitting protesters with his car.
A recent video shows a member of the Boston PD seemingly brag about driving his car into a crowd of protesters. Bodycam footage appears to show the officer brag about the incident before backtracking when realizing the camera was on. The officer has been suspended with pay and Mayor Marty Walsh has expressed remorse for this instance, but that’s not enough. The officer at fault deserves to be fired and arrested for attempted vehicular manslaughter, for which he has reportedly admitted guilt.
As public trust in the police continues to shrink, moments like these are a reminder of why there are still nightly protests against the actions of law enforcement. Systemic mistreatment of the citizens they are sworn to protect is unacceptable and violations of that trust need to be treated swiftly and seriously. This is why it’s important to stand up and voice your concern with the acti
