An emotional Boston Mayor Marty Walsh delivered what may have been his last State of the City address on Tuesday, as he prepares for a new post as President-elect Joe Biden s labor secretary.
Acknowledging his pending departure, Walsh said that he ll bring the city, my heart, with him to Washington, and that as part of the Biden administration, he will work to make sure it s the best federal partner Boston and America s cities ever had.
Walsh gave the annual speech virtually, devoting much of it to the coronavirus pandemic that s ravaged the city and country. But he also touched on his achievements not only from the past year but over his seven-year tenure at City Hall. And he declared that Boston may be struggling, but it s positioned for a strong recovery.

Biden chose Boston mayor Marty Walsh (D.) to lead the Department of Labor, praising the longtime union ally as a good friend and stand up guy in a Friday announcement. As head of Boston s Building and Construction Trades Council, however, Walsh was ensnared in a federal probe alleging strong-arm tactics by union leaders.
Federal agents captured Walsh on tape candidly discussing strong-arm tactics with a fellow local labor leader in October 2012. The Boston Democrat recalled threatening development company AvalonBay with permitting problems on an upcoming project should it fail to hire union laborers, according to a 2016

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh, who was nominated last week to serve in President-elect Joe Biden’s Cabinet as labor secretary, was once linked to a federal probe alleging his associates had used illegal tactics to strong-arm local developers.
Walsh faced scrutiny in 2016 after the Boston Globe reported that his name had surfaced during a federal investigation into allegations that unions had improperly pressured developers and businesses to hire union workers for their projects. While Walsh was not the probe’s subject and was never charged with a crime, questions arose about tactics he purportedly employed in 2012 while head of the Boston Building Trades, a group which oversaw several local unions, prior to his tenure as mayor.
