Polk County opens COVID-19 vaccine appointment hotline for seniors

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – The Polk County Department of Health opened a phoneline Friday to begin making vaccine appointments for people 65 and older.
In early January, Florida was vaccinating only three priority groups: Health care workers, long-term care facility staff and residents and people 65 or older. The health care group includes EMTs and paramedics as well as Department of Health staff.

With Polk County’s vaccination site, all 10 counties in the Central Florida region will now be offering the shots to residents 65 and older. Eligible groups do not need to be a resident of the county and/or city where they are vaccinated.
LAKELAND The surge in COVID-19 infections peaked with Wednesday’s report of a record 513 new cases for Polk County.
The previous daily high for the county was 505 on July 18, according to The Ledger’s records.
The county was averaging 309.3 cases a day during December through Wednesday. With only two reporting days remaining, Polk is almost certain to surpass the previous high of 279.5 daily cases set in July, during the previous peak of the pandemic.
The Florida Department of Health reported a positive rate of 12.73% for Polk County residents’ tests processed Tuesday, well below the high of 36.6% reported the previous day. That was the first time the daily figure had exceeded 20%.
The Polk County Commission got to honor a person last week who has shown devotion and dedication to several causes over 30 years of living in Cedartown and being the keeper of some of its rich history.
Donnie Jarrell was named the 2020 Polk County Citizen of the Year during the boardâs work session on Monday, Dec. 7, and was recognized with a proclamation and presented a plaque and a gift basket with several items from businesses and organizations in Polk County.
Commission Chairman Hal Floyd read the proclamation, which highlighted Jarrellâs several contributions, including preserving historical documents and artifacts for the Polk County Historical Society, volunteering for multiple charity golf tournaments and events, and being very influential in the creation of Cedartownâs Holloway Hunny Pot Festival, which honors Polk County native Sterling Holloway, the original voice of Winnie the Pooh for Walt Disney features.
