After months of suspension, police checkpoints are to resume across the country today as approved by police commander Suwat Jangyodsuk.
Shortly after he took the top position at the Royal Thai Police (RTP), Pol Gen Suwat decided to put the checkpoints on hold, citing motorists complaints about rampant extortion by some unscrupulous officers whom he said badly tainted the police s image. Most of the complaints pointed fingers at alcohol checkpoints.
In altering his order, the police chief insisted all checkpoints will operate with transparency as the spots will be fitted with closed-circuit television devices to record what s happening. Before setting up a checkpoint, officers will be required to seek permission from senior officers who oversee the areas.

The Police Commission on Friday approved a new position at headquarters, amid speculation that it will be filled by Surachate Hakparn, who is poised to return after two years of mysterious exile from law enforcement.
The advisory position, equal in rank to an assistant police chief post, was approved a week after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha signed an order to transfer Pol Lt Gen Surachate, better known as “Big Joke”, from the Prime Minister’s Office to the Royal Thai Police Office.

Forty policemen have been quarantined after coming into close contact with a Covid-19 infected riot policeman, who caught the virus on a visit to Samut Sakhon and was later deployed at protest rallies in Bangkok.
National police chief Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk on Friday outlined efforts to control the spread of the virus at Wang Thonglang police station in Bangkok, where the man works.
He said 24 police had been in close contact with the infected officer, Pol Sen Sgt Maj Somyot Nuamcharoen. They were tested for Covid-19 and quarantined at Police General Hospital. The test results were pending.

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) needs a major overhaul to tackle the long-standing problem of position buying among police.
Alleged irregularities in police promotions were raised by the Move Forward Party (MFP) MP Rangsiman Rome during the censure debate on Feb 19.
The opposition politician mentioned long-standing issues within the police force, including corruption and position buying as well as certain favours through what he called tua chang, or elephant tickets .
This is a fast-track promotion system where people, including the undeserving, avoid having to meet the criteria needed to earn promotion, he said.
