âHe bashed her black and blue,â said Mr Hamka.
Mr Hamka said his family had tried to follow up concerns with the police over Mr Loughnaneâs behaviour in recent months, but his sister had begged them not to.
Maryam Hamka had been in an on-and-off relationship with Toby Loughnane for about 16 months, according to her family.
âA lot of my family members were trying to talk with the police,â he said.
âShe was scared, so sheâd call up the police and say âhe didnât do this to meâ. She was so scared of him, so terrified.â

Police are seeking witnesses to a serious assault that occurred outside the Metro Sports Bat, Porirua in the early hours of Sunday morning.
At around 12:30am, a man was attempting to break up a fight between a group of people outside the bar.
During the incident, he was struck on the back of the head by another male and was subsequently transported to Wellington Hospital with critical injures. He remains in hospital in a serious condition.
Police are making a number of enquiries to identify the offender, including reviewing CCTV footage.
Police are also speaking to witnesses, however we would like to speak to anyone else who witnessed the assault or who was at the bar on Saturday evening and has information that can assist our enquiries.

Missing persons squad detectives are continuing their search for Brunswick woman Maryam Hamka, a day after a man arrested in relation to her disappearance was charged with matters unrelated to the case.
Ms Hamka, 36, was last seen leaving the Albert Street Woolworths in Brunswick on April 10 at 5.30pm.
