The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that
although the initial stop at a checkpoint was lawful, at the
point Police required a woman to pull over to the side of
the road for intelligence gathering purposes she was
arbitrarily, and unlawfully detained.
On 16 November
2019 Police set up a checkpoint down the road from a
‘Fight Night’ event in Ruakākā, Whangārei. A number

Government of Lao PDR to immediately release three human
rights defenders who have been detained for more than five
years, saying their continued imprisonment was an impediment
to the advancement of human rights in the South-East Asian
nation.

Minister of Police Poto Williams has announced the
members of the Ministers Arms Advisory Group, established to
ensure balanced advice to Government on firearms that is
independent of Police.
“The Ministers Arms Advisory
Group is an important part of delivering on the
Government’s commitment to ensure we maintain the balance
of keeping our communities safe, while still enabling the
safe use of firearms in our communities for legitimate
purposes,” says Poto Williams.

of this group was enabled by the laws passed last year to
