Police announced on Tuesday that they arrested a suspect, 29-year-old Jovan Young, in the murder of 10-year-old Justin Wallace, who was fatally shot at his aunt s Far Rockaway home on Saturday.
Justin would have turned 11 on Tuesday; outside his family s house, Happy Birthday balloons were tied to the front stoop with candles on the ground.
His mother, Aretha Wallace, told the Daily News, It’s very difficult, so it’s not something I’m gonna open to the public just yet. I’m trying to put on a good face for everyone.
Once known for its upscale boutiques which cemented its reputation as a top shopping destination for New Yorkers and tourists alike, the neighborhood has found itself a symbol of the toll of last year.

On June 4, 2020, protesters gathered at 149th Street and 3rd Avenue, in Mott Haven. They met at the Hub the civic and cultural center of the South Bronx to listen to speakers, pass around water and face masks, and meet the call to ”take the streets.”

Shootings Increase 73%, Robberies Up 47% as New York City Contends With Spike in Crime

The overall crime index in New York City rose 22 percent in May compared with the same month last year, according to a report released Thursday by the New York Police Department (NYPD). The statistics provide credible evidence that backs up recent media stories about a surge in crime in the city.
The report showed the two biggest crimes in May were shooting incidents and robberies. Shootings increased by 73 percent to 173, while robberies rose 46.7 percent to 1,182. There were 37 murders in May 2021, the same as May 2020.
