National leader Judith Collins has called for Police Minister Poto Williams to be sacked over her response to questions about arming police officers.
Collins made the call after Williams was interviewed by Newstalk ZB about National MP Simeon Brown wanting to bring back Armed Response Teams (ARTs), which were trialled last year and discontinued.
Williams was asked if she agreed with a statement issued by the group People Against Prisons Aotearoa after Police Commissioner Andrew Coster confirmed ARTs would not go ahead.

We are one of just 19 nations out of 197 that does not have an armed police force.
Most are island nations like the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Samoa, Fiji, Tuvalu and the like.
But Norway, the UK, with the exception of Northern Island, Iceland and New Zealand are the outliers in more developed nations who have decided that they will police by consent and not force.
However, times change, communities change and attitudes change.
For a long time, the police themselves did not want to be armed.
The most recent survey of police showed 69 per cent wanted to have guns on them at all times, not just in the boot of their cars.

I’m sure you were sickened and disgusted by the footage of that vile piece of scum punching an Auckland police officer eight times in the head and smashing him to the ground.
Would these reprobates have the same perverse bravado to have a crack at cops, if our police had guns on their hips? I don’t think so.
It’s just one reason why I’ve long supported the general arming of our frontline police. But that’s not going to happen under this Government.
