2023: 6 former governors eyeing APC chairmanship seat

The Buni-led committee, which was first given a six-month timeframe to address critical issues in the party, got an extension of six months in December last year. In extending the tenure of the committee, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party said their convention, where a new set of NWC members would emerge, would be held after the party’s membership revalidation and registration. The exercise is ongoing across the country, and barring any change, the convention will be held before the end of the tenure of the Buni-led committee. Multiple party sources told our reporters that six chieftains of the party from the North have commenced consultations for the chairmanship position. All of them are former governors who played vital roles in the formation of the party in 2013.  All the aspirants are, however, yet to formally declare their intentions for the seat.

In the convoy with the governor were the  Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur; Senator Kashim Shettima (Borno Central); APC State Caretaker Chairman, Alhaji Ali Dalori; the Chief of Staff, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, members of National and state Assemblies, members of the state Executive Council, some council chairmen, governor’s aides and other prominent politicians and members of the public.
