KeNHA Closes Section of Historic Mombasa Bridge After Emergency

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has closed a section of the Makupa Causeway bridge which connects Mombasa Island to the Kenyan mainland.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, March 16, the authority stated that the Changamwe bound direction from Mombasa Island would be closed to motorists between March 16, and Wednesday, March 17.
The closure was as a result of repair works from an undisclosed emergency situation. All traffic shall be diverted to the Mombasa island-bound traffic carriageway to allow the necessary repair works.

Over the past couple of years, mega infrastructure developments have been taking shape in Mombasa County geared towards enhancing its image as the gateway to East and Central Africa and as the tourism capital of the region.
Prior to the multi-billion road projects, the county which is known as a hub for shipping activities, experienced setbacks in terms of traffic flow of cargo, in and out of the port of Mombasa.
The construction of the new roads and upgrading of the existing ones has helped reduce travel time, improve connectivity as well as improve socio-economic activities in the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has attributed the current increase in the number of vessel waiting to dock at the Port of Mombasa to a surge in cargo imported after Covid-19 pandemic cessation.
KPA Acting Managing Director Rashid Salim said the port is experiencing peak moments with recorded full container berth occupancy “with minimum vessel delays”.

Barely a year after President Uhuru Kenyatta signed an executive order to collapse all transport agencies into one, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has officially taken over Kenya Railway Corporation (KRC) yards.
KPA Acting Managing Director Salim Rashid said Kenya Railways has handed over the Kilindi loading yard, five rail lines and equipment to the port agency.
The decision, he noted, was aimed at boosting efficiency in the evacuation of cargo from the port of Mombasa by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

Two oil marketers are seeking regulatory approvals to tap into the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) business as demand for clean sources of cooking fuels grows.
Mahadi Energy Limited and OLA Energy Kenya are seeking clearance from the environmental watchdog to construct and operate an LPG terminal depot with a total storage capacity of 15,000 tonnes of LPG as well as expand the Marine Terminal respectively.
The two firms have submitted Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports to the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) for approval prior to construction of the LPG plants.
