Port Bruce welcomes its new bridge

That afternoon, the Imperial Road Bridge over Catfish Creek in Port Bruce collapsed, leaving only one access point in and out of the village. Almost three years later, the community again has a permanent structure in place. The new three-span steel girder bridge was officially opened in a ceremony Friday afternoon. Cost of replacement of the damaged bridge and reconstruction of the road approaches was projected to be $5.1 million. New Elgin County Warden Tom Marks noted investment by the federal and provincial government allowed the county to undertake the critical bridge replacement without sacrificing other important projects in Elgin communities.

Main bridge in Port Bruce, Ont reopens nearly three years after collapse

  PORT BRUCE, ONT. Nearly three years after the Imperial Road Bridge in Port Bruce, Ont. collapsed, it was reopened to traffic on Friday. Dignitaries including Environment Minister Jeff Yurek and Elgin County Warden Tom Marks were on hand for the opening. Today s a re-opening of the long-awaited bridge, three years almost. We re all just happy to have it behind us and people can just start enjoying it again, Marks said. This is going to be a good news story, all the way around. Built in the 1960s, the main crossing in Port Bruce collapsed on Feb. 23, 2018 after heavy rain and flooding sent water crashing into the base of the span.
