It is something many people take for granted, but for thousands of seafarers stuck on ships for up to 14 months at a time, internet connectivity is the only way to see their loved ones.

The idea is to expand the project to other ports and remote communities in future
Before the coronavirus pandemic seafarers could access wi-fi at ports while cargo ships were docked, but now the vessels have been forced to anchor several kilometres offshore where a signal is non-existent.

After three years in the job, Jason Hetherington will not coach the Maroons womenâs team in 2021.
The Central Queensland league legend said on Tuesday he would not be applying for the position which this year has been expanded to include work across a multifaceted program.
The 50 year old bows out on a high, having helped mastermind Queenslandâs stunning 24-18 win over New South Wales last November.
Hetherington said it would have been difficult to find time for the added responsibilities of the coaching role, given that he works full-time at the Port of Gladstone, runs his own business (Hetheringtonâs Truck Hire) and helps his father on his cattle property at Baralaba.

Central Queensland University has partnered with Gladstone Ports Corporation to deliver the scholarships, designed to improve the sustainability of the port of Gladstone and beyond.
Aspiring Engineering and economics students from the Gladstone and Central Queensland regions are encouraged to apply for the $30,000 stipend per year Ecological Engineering and Environmental Economics scholarships, which close on February 22.
Trial seawall construction will be the focus of the Ecological Engineering PhD Elevate Scholarship.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of a team of CQ University research staff including Associate Professor Emma Jackson and Dr Chris Aiken.

Innovative seaweed research and farming being undertaken at Gladstone has drawn international attention this week.
At the world economic forum Davos 2021, seaweed biofilters have been recognised as one of the top global innovations for protecting oceans.
Gladstone-based researchers believe a network of seaweed biofilters in targeted locations across the Great Barrier Reef could be part of the solution to safely soaking up excessive nitrogen and carbon dioxide that is damaging coastal ecosystems and the reef.
Every year thousands of tonnes of excess nutrients run off the land and out to the reef, reducing its resilience to recover from stress events like rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification and coral bleaching.
