Multnomah County health expert weighs in on reopening, in-person learning

MULTNOMAH COUNTY, Ore. The Multnomah County Health Department will work with Portland Public Schools as the district works to bring children back into the classroom. Gov. Kate Brown wants all Oregon schools to reopen with at least some in-person learning by April 19.
Multnomah County Deputy Public Health Officer Dr. Ann Loeffler believes it is the right call.
“I’m a big proponent of safely getting everybody back into the classroom. Portland teens at center of landmark changes in schools
Local students led charge for anti-discrimination program, school name change at Portland Public Schools.
While historic efforts to combat racism and discrimination within Portland s schools are afoot, Southwest Portland students have been at the forefront of change.
On Tuesday, Feb. 9, the Portland Public Schools Board of Directors recognized February as Black History Month, while also unanimously approving an Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppression Learning Community policy banning hate symbols and hate speech from school settings. The policy stems from the Oregon Board of Education s adoption of All Students Belong, which prohibits depictions of the Confederate flag, swastika or noose for any school-sponsored activities, with exceptions for teaching curriculum.

Portland School Board Votes to Rename Madison High School After Local Black Educator Leodis V. McDaniel It is the second Portland high school to receive a name change this year. Northeast 82nd Avenue and Madison High School. (Natalie Behring) Updated February 24 For the second time in two months, a Portland high school is being renamed for a person of color. The Portland Public Schools Board of Education has voted unanimously to change the namesake of Madison High School to Leodis V. McDaniel, who served as the school s principal from 1983 until his death in 1987. He was one of the only Black principals in Oregon at the time. An annual scholarship had previously been named in his honor.
