Paula Vogel’s “
The Mineola Twins”
Profile Theatre will present the first in a series of five planned livestream performances for 2021. This production was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Paula Vogel and directed by Josh Hecht. The comedic play centers on a pair of twins who use mistaken identity to explore culture wars from the 1950s to the 1990s. Themes include women’s sexual freedom, and the fight for reproductive rights. One twin is “good” the other “evil.” One actor plays both parts and sometimes switches between them in the same scene. This is Profile Theatre’s first stab at producing a play featuring real-time performances during the pandemic.
Every other Saturday, two or three dozen out-of-work stagehands in IATSE Local 28 come together outside the union’s office at the Oregon Labor Center in Southeast Portland to receive donated food and household supplies. On Feb. 27, the array ranging from fresh produce to Hershey’s Kisses is overseen by Local 28 Good and Welfare Committee member Laura Fraley, above. Fraley was working at the prop shop of the Portland Opera when the pandemic hit; her last day of work was March 13, 2020. Local 28 member Liz Spottswood says the event doesn’t just help members stretch their grocery budgets; it’s also a chance to catch up with coworkers at a time of isolation.

The arrival of the pandemic quickly necessitated a change in plans, however, as students returned home for a semester of virtual learning.
